The following appeared in the January 29, 2025 issue of the Oakwood Register.
According to US Census data (American Community Survey 2023), one out of every 23 Oakwood residents was born in another country. Actions announced this week have caused members of the Oakwood Inclusion Coalition to feel particular concern for the immigrants who are our neighbors in Oakwood and surrounding towns.
To our community members who are feeling vulnerable because of where you were born, know that your presence and participation in our community makes life in Oakwood richer. We believe in your worth and your belonging here.
To all members of our community, we would like to offer some practical next steps to support and uplift your immigrant neighbors:
Learn more about Welcome Dayton's work to support the integration of immigrants into the Dayton community at https://www.daytonohio.gov/998/Welcome-Dayton.
Visit https://immigration.ablelaw.org/ to learn about the vital role that immigrants play in Ohio's economy.
Speak out against anti-immigrant rhetoric and actions, including race-based targeting, vigilantism and violence.
It is our hope that Oakwood residents will continue to face the challenges of building community in good faith and with the greatest mutual respect.
Sincerely,
The Oakwood Inclusion Coalition Leadership Team
